Jennifer Shadade is one of the most talented mind sportspeople in the United States. No matter what she turns her hand to, success seems to follow, having picked up major awards in two different disciplines, multiple best-selling books, and a growing media empire.
Yet, unless you run in the circles of chess or poker, there’s a strong possibility that you may not heard of Shahade. You definitely want to know more though as her story will leave you inspired and ready to take on whatever your chosen endeavour is.
Age, Net Worth, Height, Weight, and Much More
Jennifer Shahade was born on December 31, 1980, which makes her 42. Her height and weight are not publicly known. She is also private about her net worth, so it is not publicly known. However, some people have made estimates that suggest she holds around $5 million of net assets, though it has not been possible to independently verify this.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she continues to live today. For college, Shahade moved away from her home state, choosing to study in New York and graduating with a degree in comparative literature. In 2016, Shahade married Daniel Meirom, a filmmaker and visual artist. The pair now work together on some of their projects.
Jennifer Shahade’s Early Chess Career
Jennifer Shahade is an American chess and poker player. She began her career in the former, following the path set out by her father and brother who are a FIDE Master and FIDE International Master respectively.
While she may be younger than them both, she has outshone them both, earning herself the title of FIDE Woman Grandmaster. This is just one of many impressive and record-breaking successes that Shahade has enjoyed in her career.
Having competed in chess competitions for most of her life, she picked up her first victory in a major chess tournament in 2002 when she became the US Women’s Chess Champion at just 21 years old.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Shahade followed this up the following year with a second FIDE International Master norm. Then, the year after that, she became US Women’s Chess Champion once again.
International Success and Beyond
A theme that will become prevalent across Shahade’s life is one of constantly doing something new and a great example of this is that, after enjoying success at home, she went on to represent the USA at the Chess Olympiad for three consecutive years.
However, after having this honour for a while, Shahade went on to do other things with her chess career. This includes showing off her skills by taking part in chess exhibitions. These simultaneous games involve her taking on up to 50 different people at one time, winning most of them, of course.
Through these exhibitions, Shahade has been able to travel the world, playing chess on practically every continent and against many talented players.
Poker
After dominating the world of chess, Shahade shifted her focus to poker. This popular card game is similar to chess in several ways, including the need for players to be strategic in their moves and the fact that psychology is often a big part of beating your rivals.
Even at a more elemental level, these two games share many similarities. For example, like how chess players need to understand what moves each of the different pieces can make, poker players need to memorise the different winning combinations of cards. These poker hands vary slightly, depending on which version of the game you’re playing, but the most common choices use the ‘high’ rankings with the royal flush being the best possible combination.
With similar skills required, it was only a matter of time before Shahade would see success. Her first tournament win occurred at the Prague Poker Festival in Czechia, with several more in recent years. She’s yet to pick up a WSOP bracelet, but that seems like only a matter of time.
Writing, Talking, and More
Throughout her career, Jennifer Shahade has placed a lot of effort into sharing her passion with others. This has resulted in her writing several books about chess, primarily with the aim of inspiring future generations of female players to take up the sport.
She’s making similar strides with poker. Like many other professional athletes, including Charles Barkley, she’s taken up podcasting. Her GRID podcast is an award-winning show that allows Shahade to speak to talented poker players from around the world.
