How to Host Without Ruining Your House

There’s nothing quite as admirable as being the perfect host at a dinner or house party. Being able to show off your home and share your achievements and your life with those that you wish to is such a pleasure of life. Being good at doing it is even more impressive.

When it comes to hosting though, you can never be sure that your guests will take your space as seriously as you do. Whether they become careless after a drink or two, or just don’t share your same sense of pride for your home; guests can always cause damage and mess.

While it’s inevitable that having others in your house will always risk damage and disarray, there are ways to prevent as much of this as possible. So, if you’re looking to host guests at your house and you’re worried about the potential damage, we’ve come up with a few tips to help things run smoothly and minimise any damage.

    Cleaning

Before having anyone over it’s good to have your house in tip-top condition. Not only will you have the biggest sense of pride to show off your house when it’s looking its best, but guests will also be more encouraged to take care of a space that’s been well maintained.

You should ensure that you have thoroughly cleaned the bathroom, as a dirty toilet can be one of the things found most offputting when guests visit others’ homes. A clean kitchen is also very important if you’re serving food as you want people to feel comfortable that the food they had was prepared hygienically.

Cleaning your floors will help to prevent any dirt from getting trodden into carpets or rugs. You may ask guests to remove their shoes before entering your home, but this can make people feel uncomfortable so it is worth considering what is more important: to prevent mess or have people feel comfortable in your home.

After your guests leave make sure to get started on the cleaning straight away. Even if you don’t feel like it, you will wake up feeling much better knowing that there won’t be any soaked-in stains or dirt waiting for you.

    Prevention

You can prevent damage to your home in a number of ways. You can try laying rugs that you care less about over nice flooring to catch any spills or shoe dirt. Alternatively, there are rugs which are machine washable.

Similarly, sofa and chair covers can be great to ensure that any accidents can be easily and swiftly dealt with. You can also employ the use of plastic cups or disposable plates if you’re worried about things getting broken, but it is also worth considering the environmental impact of these items.

    Rentals

If you want to provide your guests with nice glassware but don’t want to use your own, you can always consider renting glasses and plates. You’ll likely be charged for the broken ones, but you can rest assured that you will have enough crockery to cater for all of your guests while making sure the good china stays good.

You may also want to spring for a catering service which can provide more party-friendly food. This is also a great way to ensure you’re spending more time with your guests and less tucked away in the kitchen.

    House Rules

Your house is still your space at the end of the day and it’s important to be able to lay down ground rules. If you don’t want shoes inside, then make sure they’re left at the door. Want to go to bed early? Set a curfew.

You can make certain areas of the house off-limits and keep your valuable items in there to make sure they’re safe. Don’t be afraid to put your foot down and make sure that people respect the rules of your house, they are guests after all.

    VIPs

One of the best ways to ensure that others respect your house is by keeping the guest list to only people you know. Once random people start entering your house, you’re at a much greater risk of people disrespecting your space and damaging it.

ake sure that you know who is in your house at all times and then at least if anything does go wrong, you have someone you can hold accountable.
