Using a budget is a great way to manage your money in a balanced manner. It will ensure that your necessary costs are covered and that you’re actively saving for the future. Real estate home warranty can help many homeowners budgeting and managing their finances.

If you’re new to budgeting, it may seem like a lot of work at first. But, with practice, it can become second nature.

    1. Track Your Expenses

One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to track your expenses. This may mean using a budgeting app or even just old-fashioned pen and paper. Start by identifying fixed monthly bills like rent or mortgage, phone, garbage and insurance. Then, list variable expenses, such as groceries and dining out, gifts, clothes and gas. Estimate these expenses based on past bank and credit card statements, if necessary.

As you spend money, subtract it from the appropriate budget categories. For example, if you buy movie tickets with cash, subtract that from entertainment. Eventually, tracking your spending will become a part of your daily routine.

    2. Make a To-Buy List

Keep a to-buy list tacked to your fridge or some other central location in your home. Each week, open your fridge and cupboards to take stock of what needs restocking. This will help you avoid making wasteful impulse purchases.

When writing your list, be sure to include all the ingredients needed for meal planning and any other household essentials. Try to group similar items together (ie: all veggies in one category). This will make it easier to compare prices and find the best deals.

Be sure to leave wiggle room for coupons or sales. However, avoid committing to any items that you know you will not use – this can lead to food waste!

    3. Make a Meal Plan

A meal plan is a way to save money by making a list of meals and then buying the ingredients you need. You can use a meal-planning app or even a calendar hanging on your fridge to write down what you’re going to cook each week.

Try to find recipes that use the same ingredients so you can buy them in bulk. This will help you save money and time at the grocery store.

Make a list of the ingredients you need for each recipe and cross out any items that you already have. This can be done using the notes app on your phone or a notebook and pen.

    4. Set a Budget

You can’t effectively manage your money without a budget. Create a budget that works for you and stick to it! Be sure to review it regularly. You may get a raise, your expenses might change, or you might have reached a goal and want to plan for a new one.

Track your spending by reviewing your checkbook register, credit card statements, and store receipts to determine where you’re really wasting money. Next, set some CUT BACKs and ELIMINATEs that align with your values and priorities, such as cutting back on lattes at Starbucks or settling for a lower-priced cable TV package.

Finally, figure your recurring monthly expenses like rent or mortgage, utility bills, debt payments, and other necessary expenditures.

    5. Set Aside Money for Unexpected Expenses

Unexpected expenses like medical bills, car repairs and home repairs can wreak havoc on your finances. However, they can be less scary with a bit of planning and saving ahead of time.

Start by reviewing all of your expenses, including credit card statements, utility bills, loan payments and receipts. Then, look for ways to reduce your variable and discretionary expenses, such as cutting back on that daily cup of coffee or eliminating the weekly manicure.

You also need to consider irregular expenses that only occur occasionally, such as a vacation or holiday gifts. Make sure to include these in your budget each month, and set up a savings plan to cover them if necessary.

    6. Make a Savings Goal

When it comes to financial goals, there are many ways to approach it. One way is to determine what you want to save for (a new handbag, event tickets or a house), and then identify any non-negotiable expenses that could be cut.

The next step is to set a savings goal, and decide how much you will save each month in order to reach your target. Setting a specific deadline and breaking the goal down into smaller milestones can also help keep you on track.

Use the budgeting tips above to create a savings plan that works for you. Then, start saving today!
